1974 – 1979:  Poet-in-Residence, Choppin State College, Baltimore, Maryland

1979: Named Poet Laureate of the state of Maryland

1982 – 1983: Visiting Writer at Columbia University School of the Arts

1982 – 1983: Jirry Moore Visiting Writer at George Washington University

1985 – 1989, Named Professor of Literature and Creative Writing at the University of California, Santa Cruz

1998:  Named Blackburn Professor of Creative Writing at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina

1991 – 2005: Named Distinguished Professor of Literature and Distinguished Professor of Humanities at St. Mary's College
Maryland.

Woodrow Wilson and Lila Wallace/Readers Digest visiting fellowship to Fisk University, Alma College, Albright College, Davidson College, and others.


Other Activities of Merit


Lucille Clifton is a National Advisor to The Friends of William Stafford Foundation.  In 2001 The Foundation received the Whiting Memorial Award, from The International Society for Philosophical Enquiry, in recognition of their outstanding and continued contribution to the advancement of society.

She is a Trustee for the Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore.

In 1999, she was appointed and remains a Chancellor of the American Academy of Poets
