Introduction

"Tests and measurements are standardized instruments, such as questionnaires, inventories and scales designed to measure or gauge some quality, knowledge, need, behavior or trend. They may be used for diagnosis, research, or assessment in education, psychology, and other social science disciplines."

The design and instrument of a test is usually copyrighted and should not be implemented without the permission of the holder of the copyright, usually the author or publisher.

Standardized instruments are usually available from the publisher or author at a price. Some instruments may appear in journal articles, dissertations and books. Hence a keyword search in an appropriate database linking the name or subject of a test with the terms "tests and measures", "inventory", "scales" or some other synonym may retrieve articles which describe the test, its application, or even the test instrument itself.

Below is a list of printed sources containing unpublished tests whch are available in the Howard University Libraries. In Sterling, the library's online catalog, you may search under the author or name of a test, or the author or title of a book containing a test to see if the test is available. You may also do a title or keyword search using the term "tests and measures for social work" to see an alphabetical arrangement of tests available in books and journals owned by the Howard libraries.

Mental Measurements Yearbook, which reviews tests and measures is subscribed by the Howard University Libraries as an online database. It is accessible via the A-Z index on the Library's home page.

Also listed below are selected internet sites which will give more information about tests and measures and in some cases the instruments themselves.
