The Genius, by Warren Elliot Henry

The Genius
By Warren E. Henry
October 5, 1999

Genius born in slavery
Eager mind, impression made
Oracle, lost in casualty
Reclaimed for prize horse in trade
Grace, Simpson College, maturity
Exhibit in art, talent displayed

Wonder about nature, for knowledge yearned
Armed with vigor, brain and skill
Sweet Potatoes yielding secrets earned
Human health, a need to fill
Important nutrient in peanuts learned
Noble deeds proliferate, his mind an idea mill
Goal unbounded, about human path concerned
Tuskegee, garden for nurture, robust will
Onward and upward, the tables turned
Nature and destiny to fulfill

Caring, striving night and day
Aims encouraged career design
Royal pigment from plants and clay
Valor, science and art combined
Excellence emerged, messages convey
Reverence for Carver, a soul divine
