Summer 2011 Program
The Summer Program is a rigorous academic enrichment program for promising high school juniors interested in studying and exploring careers in science, engineering, and mathematics. During three to four weeks in the summer before their senior year, participants tackle advanced academic challenges, develop the skills in current technology in science and engineering, improve communication of scientific principles, and create a network of individuals with similar interest. Additionally, the program strives to increase interactions between faculty and students in the aforementioned areas. The Summer Program is focused on increasing the number of minority students who pursue degrees the STEM fields.

Sunday, June 19 to Thursday, July 14, 2011
Participants are expected to arrive June 20th between the hours of 2pm-4pm for check-in.
Students will be required to check-out from the residence hall on July 15th between 2pm-4pm.

Accommodations
Students participating in 2011 Summer Program will be housed in the Tubman Quadrangle Residential Hall on the campus of Howard University. The rooms are doubles and students will be paired with a roommate of the same gender. The address and phone number for the residential hall are as follows:

Directions
HU MSEIP summer program operates as a closed campus, meaning students are not allowed to leave the premises or have visitors for the duration of the program. Any emergency exceptions MUST be approved by the director of the program in consultation with the program staff.

Reception
There will be a welcoming reception on June 19th at 5pm to open the summer program. At this reception participants and their parents will have the opportunity to interact with the staff members of the summer program and obtain answers to questions about the program.

Attire
Dress code: business casual.
The dress code is strictly enforced.
Participants are expected to be appropriately dressed for a university campus environment. As part of the program, participants will be expected to make professional presentations and will be required to wear business causal attire on such occasions. Males are to wear belts at all times, with no hanging pants. Females shall wear appropriate clothing at all times.

Celebration of independence Day
Since July 5th falls on a Monday, the university will be closed on that day in observance of Independence Day. To allow students to fully participate in the celebrations, student participants will be allowed to leave the campus in the company of a parent or designee on Friday, July 1st after 4 PM and MUST return to the dormitory no later than 10 PM on Monday, July 4th . Students who are unable to leave the campus will be fully accommodated in the dormitory and will participate in planned celebratory activities by the program staff.

Program Closure
Dress code: business casual
The summer program will conclude with a banquet on July 14th beginning at 12 noon and terminating at 2pm. Parents are invited to join in this event. Due to budget constraints a student will not be allowed to invite friends or siblings to the closing banquet. Each student is allowed to have immediate parents (no more than two) at the closing banquet. The dress code for this event will be business casual. Immediately following the banquet, students will be required to check-out from the residence hall no later than 4pm.

Travel Information
For those who will be flying into Washington, DC please designate Reagan National Airport, with the airport code DCA, as your destination. Once you have booked your travel arrangements, please email your itinerary to eglakpe@howard.edu AND hu.mseip@gmail.com. You must make your own arrangements if you decide to fly into BWI or IAD. e.g. supershuttle, taxi. The program will not provide accomodation for parents who decide to spend the night of the first day in Washington, D.C.
For those who are driving to Washington, DC below are some general directions to the main campus from the DC Metro area. Please use maps.google.com or mapquest.com to get specific directions from your location to the address provided for the resident hall.
From Maryland - Traveling West
Take the Baltimore-Washington Parkway (I-295) to New York Avenue (R-50). Take New York Avenue to Florida Avenue and turn right. Take Florida Avenue to Georgia Avenue and turn right. Take Georgia Avenue to Howard Place (approximately four blocks) and turn right. You are now on the campus of
Howard University.
From Maryland - Traveling South
Take I-95 to I-495 (Silver Spring). Take I-495 to Georgia Avenue (Silver Spring). Take Georgia Avenue to Howard Place (approximately seven miles). Turn left. You are now on the campus of Howard University.
From Maryland - Traveling North
Following I-295 North across the 11th Street Bridge. Go through tunnel (I-395 North) to the 3rd Street Tunnel. Take the 3rd Street Tunnel to Massachusetts Avenue exit. (You will actually be on New Jersey Avenue not Massachusetts Avenue.) Take New Jersey Avenue to Florida Avenue and turn left. Take Florida Avenue to Georgia Avenue (approximately three blocks) and turn right. Take Georgia Avenue to Howard Place (approximately four blocks) and turn right. You are now on the campus of Howard University
From Virginia - Traveling East
Follow Shirley Highway (I-395) East through the 3rd Street Tunnel (I-395 North) to the Massachusetts Avenue exit. (You will actually be on New Jersey Avenue not Massachusetts Avenue.) Take New Jersey Avenue to Florida Avenue and turn left. Take Florida Avenue to Georgia Avenue (approximately three blocks) and turn right. Take Georgia Avenue to Howard Place (approximately four blocks) and turn right. You are now on the Campus of Howard University.
OR
Take I-66 East across the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Bridge to Constitution Avenue. Take Constitution Avenue (23rd Street is at the end of the bridge) to 7th Street and turn left. (At Florida Avenue, 7th Street becomes Georgia Avenue.). Take Georgia Avenue to Howard Place (approximately four blocks) and turn right. You are now on the campus of Howard University.
From Virginia - Traveling North
Take I-95 to I-395 to the 12th Street exit. Turn right onto Constitution Avenue. Follow Constitution Avenue to 7th Street and turn left. Follow 7th Street (at Florida Avenue, 7th street becomes Georgia Avenue) to Howard Place (approximately four blocks from Florida Avenue) and turn right. You are now on the campus of Howard University.
