Overview
The Prints and Photographs department houses more than 50,000 graphic images, including slides, postcards, paintings, prints, maps, broadsides, illustrations and photographs. The department's function is to make these visual resources available to the public for the purpose of study, research, and exhibition. The oldest materials date from the 1770s and include daguerreotypes and tintypes. Most of the photograph collection dates from the 1930s to the 1970s and includes the work of professional photographers, and hobbyists. The collection is divided into three categories: individuals and groups, subjects, and geographic locality. Graphic images at MSRC are located among personal papers, archival collections, illustrated publications, and in the varied collections of the Prints and Photographs Department. Photographs depicting Howard University are located in the Howard University Archives.
Research in the Prints and Photographs Department is by appointment only.
