President Says Fund-raising Key to SFA II
University
President H. Patrick Swygert held a town hall
meeting for the faculty and student body, April 3
and 4 respectively, to discuss the status of
Strategic Framework for Action II. In response to
e-mails he received regarding aspects of SFA II,
Swygert gave more specificity to the items that
were included, explaining the need to identify
resources to accomplish the agenda.
Highlighting the University's improved ranking
as a Tier II institution, the construction of the
Health Sciences and Law School libraries, and the
wireless technology on campus, Swygert said,
"We've come a far distance in the last six
years," he said. "And there are many
more opportunities available to us."
What's Included in SFA II
Swygert discussed the construction of the
Interdisciplinary Science Center, new facilities
for the schools of Communications and Education,
a new Burr Gymnasium, the formation of the
Metropolitan College, and the renovation of the
Miner building, a hold over from SFA I.
"As ambitious as the capital projects
agenda is, we can't get to everything
simultaneously," he said, adding that the
University's Beltsville campus also requires some
attention.
Source of Funds
Swygert said the funds for the University's
capital projects will be raised through external
sources, the private sector and fund-raising. He
said he will spend more time on external
fund-raising when A. Toy Caldwell-Colbert assumes
her position as the new provost.
Applauding the $5 million pledge of Chairman
Frank Savage, Swygert announced that the
University's Capital Campaign will be launched
during the March 2002 Charter Day.
"It is a very ambitious agenda, that will
require a great deal of work," he said.
"We can be a Tier I institution. We should
be a Tier I institution. But it's going to take
fund-raising."
