Dean of the Chapel Holds Memorial for Deceased Students

The Reverend Dr. Bernard Richardson, dean of the Andrew Rankin Memorial Chapel, held a memorial service, "Reflections: Remembering Yesterday," on April 27 to celebrate the lives of the eight students who died during the 2000-2001 academic year.

The Howard University community gathered to remember Travis Cortez "T.J." Birgans, Sidney Terrell Harris, Robert L. Henderson, Shalanda Yanik Issac, Prince C. Jones, Martha Day Staples, Habib Warmack and Jasmynn Marie Victoria Williams.

In a ceremony of words, prayer and song, the message encouraged those present to "celebrate life and find strength in the memories."

"However momentary our time on this plane of consciousness, the spirit does live forever and that is what we celebrate today," said University President H. Patrick Swygert.

"As we reflect, we must remember what they brought to our lives," said HUSA President Sellano Simmons. "... we have eight more angels in heaven to guide us along the way."

A candle lighting ceremony was held before the conclusion of the service. In addition to the music provided by the Howard Gospel Choir, students Cheryl Gilbreath and Andrew Harden performed one selection appropriately titled, "I Can."
