| School of Divinity Receives $465,487 from United Church of Christ
The School of Divinity received $465,487 from the Central Atlantic Conference of the United Church of Christ (CACUCC) to help fund the American Missionary Association (AMA) Chair and the New Vision for a Century Campaign to establish the Ph.D. in Religious Studies program. The presentation was made on Wednesday, Nov. 3, during a leadership reception held as the highlight of the school’s two-day convocation, “From Calvary to Capitol Hill: Prophetic Witness and Public Policy.” Howard University was conceived through the First Congregational Church (United Church of Christ) largely through the inspiration of General Oliver O. Howard, who was a member of the church and served as head of the Freedman’s Bureau. The AMA was an abolitionist group within the Congregational Churches of New England that established schools, colleges, academies and churches throughout the south for the benefit of freed slaves. It also provided assistance to the newly developing Howard University and what became its School of Divinity. Family of Former Pharmacology Professor Gives $50,000 to Department The Department of Pharmacology received $50,000 in memory of James Russell Tureman, M.D., former professor who passed away on Sept. 7. The presentation was made by daughter Dr. Lillian Tureman-Durham on Wednesday, Nov. 10, following a naming ceremony of the department’s conference room to the “James Russell Tureman, M.D., Professor Emeritus, Department of Pharmacology Memorial Conference Room.” Tureman, who served for half of a century as an outstanding physician, researcher and teacher, began his career at Howard in the Department of Pharmacology in 1947 as a teaching assistant and quickly rose through the ranks to full professor. Although Dr. Tureman officially retired in 1980 as professor emeritus, he remained dedicated and available, teaching and providing many services until 2000 when his health prevented him from continuing. In the presence of faculty, staff, students and the Tureman family, Dr. Robert E. Taylor, professor and department chair, read a proclamation that stated, in part: “James Russell Tureman, beloved ‘son of Howard,’ your hard work, vision and leadership in the early development of a rigorous teaching and research program has helped pave the road into the 21st century for the Department of Pharmacology and the College of Medicine. We proudly thank you for your generous contributions and sincere commitment to serve."
