Department of Modern Languages Awarded $992,004 Grant from DoD

The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures has received a contract award in the amount of $992,004 from the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) to establish a Center for Foreign Language Study at Howard University. During the grant period, the center will publicize and promote nationwide second language study among elementary to college-level students.

In addition, the center will develop and enhance language programs in four of the less commonly taught languages (Arabic, Chinese, Korean, and Japanese); partner with a local pre-collegiate school to offer instruction in one of those languages; provide training seminars on intercultural awareness; and create a repository of computer-based language and cross-cultural teaching materials. Dr. James J. Davis, department chair, is the principal investigator.
