College of Engineering, Architecture and Computer Sciences Awards $160,000 in Clare Boothe Luce Scholarships
Four Howard Faculty Among Fulbright Scholars Named for 2005-2006 Four Howard University faculty members each have been named a Fulbright Scholar for 2005-2006. They are among the 850 U.S. faculty and professionals, who have been awarded grants to lecture and conduct research abroad. Likewise, a similar number of scholars abroad have been awarded grants to come to the U.S. Sponsored by the Department of State, more than 250,000 scholarships have been awarded since the program’s inception in 1946. Fulbright Scholar grantees are: Abraham Rock Ford, Ph.D., professor and graduate film sequence coordinator, Department of Radio, Television and Film, will travel to Addis Ababa University in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to lecture on film studies and conduct research on the establishment of a film studies department at the university. John P. Tharakan, Ph.D., professor, Department of Chemical Engineering, will travel to South India to research the evaluation and assessment of bioenvironmental control and remediation technologies. Jon Stanton Woodson, Ph.D., Department of English, will travel to the University of Pecs in Pecs, Hungary to lecture on American literature. Additionally, Michael Frazier, Ph.D., Department of Political Science, has been selected for a Fulbright Senior Specialists grant in public administration at the Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics in China. The specialists program is designed to provide short-term academic opportunities (two to six weeks) for U.S. faculty and professionals, giving them greater flexibility to pursue a grant that works best with their current academic or professional commitments. Colleges of Medicine and Dentistry Partner with Johns Hopkins for Research Program Howard University’s Clinical Research Scholars Program welcomed Kimberly Y. Walton, Ph.D., Junior Faculty Scholar, and Lien Diep, M.D., MPH–Postdoctoral Fellow, as its first award recipients during the fall 2005 semester. As recipients of the award, Walton and Diep will have the opportunity to work closely with well-experienced and knowledgeable clinicians and academicians from various disciplines, who will serve as their mentors while in the program. Researchers will participate in a formalized, in-depth and advanced didactic training program in clinical research offered by the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions (JHMI) that includes: experimental therapeutics; genetics and molecular epidemiology; evaluation of drugs, devices and surgical procedures; bioinformatics; patient outcomes, health services and health disparities; social and behavioral sciences; and statistical methods The program, a partnership between the colleges of Medicine and Dentistry and JHMI, endeavors to develop future leaders in clinical research who are highly trained in clinical research design and methods, skilled in the tools of clinical investigation, and able to work creatively and collaboratively with their colleagues in other disciplines to generate new knowledge to improve health.
