Howard University Hosts Annual Charter Day Convocation and Dinner
Provost Richard English to Deliver the Address

Howard University will observe its 138th Charter Day Convocation and Dinner on March 4 and 5, respectively. This year, the convocation will be held on Friday, March 4, at 11 a.m. in Cramton Auditorium. Howard’s own Richard Allyn English, Ph.D., provost and chief academic officer, will deliver the convocation address.

The former dean and professor of the School of Social Work from 1985 to 2003, English has an extensive career in higher education. Before joining Howard, he had an accomplished 18-year career at the University of Michigan where he served as a member of the faculty, assistant dean of the School of Social Work, chairman of the Joint Doctoral Program in Social Work and Social Science, and associate vice president for Academic Affairs.

He is widely published within academia, covering subjects such as human service organizations, African-American families, refugees and immigrants, the homeless, education, child welfare, social welfare policy, social policy, and mental health and welfare reform.

On Saturday, four outstanding alumni will be honored during the 81st Annual Charter Day Dinner. Trustee Addison Barry Rand, chairman and the chief executive officer, Equitant, is this year’s corporate chairman; Johnnie L. Cochran Jr., Esq., the Cochran Firm, is the dinner chairman. JPMorgan Chase & Co. will receive the 2005 Corporate Award.

The 2005 Charter Day Dinner Alumni Honorees:

Dr. Walter J. Leonard, in the fields of education and civil rights. A School of Law graduate, he has served as president of Fisk University, special assistant to the president at Harvard University, and assistant dean of both the Howard and Harvard schools of law. He also was the founding chairman of the W.E.B. DuBois Institute at Harvard
Dr. Charles J. McDonald, in the fields of medicine and community service. A member of the Howard Board of Trustees since 1993, he is a professor and chairman of the Department of Dermatology at Brown Medical School and Physician-in-Chief of Dermatology at the Rhode Island Hospital. He is also the current president of the American Dermatological Association. He earned the M.D. degree with highest distinction from the College of Medicine.
Ms. Wendy Raquel Robinson, in the field of entertainment. A graduate of the Department of Theatre Arts, she was made famous for her role as Regina Grier on “The Steve Harvey Show.” She has since appeared in numerous television shows and films, including “The Proud Family,” “All of Us,” “NYPD Blue,” “Miss Congeniality,” and “Two Can Play that Game.”
Dr. Thelma Barnaby Thompson, in the field of education. The 12th president of the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore, she is a triple alumna of Howard, having earned the doctorate in English literature in 1978, the master’s in English six years prior to that, and her bachelor’s in English in 1970.
