Howard’s 137th Commencement Convocation Marked by Several Milestones

Howard University celebrated its 137th Commencement Convocation on May 14. Marked by several milestones, this ceremony was inspiring not only for the graduates, but for all in attendance. This year, the University welcomed its largest graduating class ever, conferring nearly 2,900 undergraduate, graduate, doctoral and professional degrees. The number includes the 214 graduates from the School of Law, also its largest class ever.

Representing the exceptional graduates comprising the class of 2005 were Dora Jordan, an 84-year-old retired teacher and guidance counselor, who received her master’s in religious studies, and University employee Bettie Lowe, who returned to college after 40 years to complete her program and earn her B.S. in sociology.

“We are pleased indeed to be celebrating our students’ successes, triumphs, passion and determination that have sustained their dreams along the way,” said President H. Patrick Swygert.

In addition to Lowe, Howard employees who received their degrees included: Bridgett Ellison, who received the M.A. in education; Jeffrey Fearing, Ph.D. in U.S. history; Raul Gordon, B.A. in anthropology; Tiffany Johnson, M.S. in nutritional sciences; Yanick Rice Lamb, M.B.A.; Tonya McGill, B.A. in administration of justice; Joan Oboite, M.S. in nursing; Cherree Sanders, M.A. in religion; Donna Powell, B.B.A. in management information systems; and Jamie Walker, Ph.D. in English.

The the College of Pharmacy’s first class of graduates from its Non-Traditional Doctor of Pharmacy (NTDP) Degree Program launched in 2003. The 14 doctoral candidates, who received the Pharm.D degree, were the initial class to matriculate through Howard’s first entirely Internet-based professional degree program.

Kweisi Mfume, guest orator, delivered an appropriate address in which he encouraged the graduates to “confront the doors of opportunity and make them open.” He was presented with a Special Citation of Achievement during the ceremony. Additional presentations were made to Cathy Hughes, Radio One founder and CEO, who received the Doctor of Humane Letters honoris causa; Dr. Benjamin Payton, president, Tuskegee University, Doctor of Humane Letters honoris causa; and Trustee Chairman emeritus Frank Savage, CEO of Savage Holdings LLC, Doctor of Humanities honoris causa.
