New Center at Howard Hospital to Provide Comprehensive HIV/AIDS Care

Officials at Howard University Hospital held a ribbon cutting on May 24 for the new Center for Infectious Disease Management and Research (CIDMAR) located in the Towers Auditorium. The center will provide comprehensive HIV/AIDS care and early intervention, and it is being funded by the Ryan White Title III Early Intervention Services grant from the Health Resource and Services Administration totaling $1,750,000 over five years.

“The CIDMAR will link individuals living with HIV/AIDS, who are not currently receiving care, to ongoing, targeted, comprehensive services,” said Dr. Celia Maxwell, principal investigator and director of the center.

Services provided by CIDMAR will include: on-site patient case management, counseling and testing, specialty services and referral services to other community-based organizations.

African Americans in the District of Columbia comprise approximately 75 percent of cumulative AIDS cases. And, the percentage of newly diagnosed AIDS cases among all communities of color in the District, including Latinos and Asian/Pacific Islanders, is increasing at a steady rate.

“The new center will enable our researchers, doctors and students to further examine the AIDS crisis and help to curtail the problem within the community,” said Dr. Victor Scott, interim vice president for health sciences.
