College of Dentistry Cuts the Ribbon on New Simulation Laboratory

The College of Dentistry cut the ribbon on its new simulation lab on Wednesday, March 16, in the presence of University administrators, faculty, staff and students. The laboratory, which comprises 45 stationary student stations managed by one simulation laboratory instructor, utilizes a multimedia teaching system that allows the display of a sizeable volume of information or images to be viewed by a large number of students.

In a conventional pre-clinical lab setting, students are not always in clear sight of the instructor. This environment allows instructors to conduct demonstrations or provide information that can be viewed on LCD flat panel monitors installed at each station.

“Being one of only 24 in the country, this lab typifies what it means to be on the cutting-edge,” said Provost Richard English, Ph.D.

“I congratulate Dean Rouse and the entire College of Dentistry on this accomplishment,” said President H. Patrick Swygert. “When it comes to growth and development, I am always looking to the future, so I am already seeing the positive impact this facility is going to have on our students and the patients they serve, and am anticipating continuous expansion of our University’s health sciences division.”

The College of Dentistry made history during the 1971-72 academic year when it unveiled the world's first convertible clinic laboratory with 45 teaching stations. It was also the first institution to place a dental mannequin on a dental chair for pre-clinical instruction.
