University Honors Its Own during Charter Day Convocation and Dinner

Howard University observed its 138th Charter Day Convocation on March 4 and the 81st Charter Day Dinner on March 5. Richard Allyn English, Ph.D., provost and chief academic officer, delivered the convocation address after receiving a Citation of Achievement. Reflecting on his tenure at the University, English spoke on “The Howard Experience: Unique and Irreplaceable.”

President H. Patrick Swygert, who introduced English, spoke of his vast experience and respectability within Howard and throughout academia. He said when he announced English’s candidacy for the position of chief academic officer he was met with “Why not? But of course” at every level, from the board of trustees to the faculty. “That endorsement and vote of confidence has been more than rewarded during his tenure,” Swygert said.

In a fitting complement to the address, the Howard University Choir, under the direction of the J. Weldon Norris, gave two rousing performances: "Worthy is the Lamb" and "Hallelujah" from Handel's Messiah, and "The Day is Past and Gone," "Run On" and "Rock-A-My-Soul" from Howard Roberts' arrangement of Revelations.
