Professor Ura Jean Oyemade Bailey, Department of Human Development and Psychoeducational Studies, and director, Center for Drug Abuse Research, has been selected to receive the 2005 Dr. Lonnie E. Mitchell Award during the Seventh Annual Lonnie E. Mitchell National HBCU Substance Abuse Conference at the Wyndham Inner Harbor Hotel in Baltimore. The award was presented by Mitchell’s daughter, Cherie Mitchell. Bailey was recognized for reflecting Mitchell’s work of developing innovative substance abuse approaches and mentoring future leaders in the substance abuse field.
Associate Professor Michael Frazier, Department of Political Science, was presented the 2005 Dr. Anna Julia Cooper Award at the 35th annual meeting of the National Conference of Black Political Scientists in March in Arlington, Va. It is given to the educator who has demonstrated excellence in the classroom as a teacher, advisor and academic counselor, and is named for the fabled administrator and teacher of the M Street School in Washington, D.C., and founder of D.C.’s Frelinghauysen University for adult education. Professor Andrew Gavil, School of Law, was selected to receive the Jerry S. Cohen Memorial Award for Antitrust Scholarship in recognition of an article he wrote entitled, “Exclusionary Distribution Strategies by Dominant Firms: Striking A Better Balance,” published in the 72 Antitrust Law Journal 3 (2004). He will receive the award on June 21 at the annual meeting of the American Antitrust Institute. Previous recipients of this award were either law or economics professors from Boston U., Columbia, Princeton and Purdue. Dr. William B. Lawson, Department of Psychiatry, recently provided consultation on improving substance abuse treatment to facilities in Capetown, South Africa. Additionally, he was an invited speaker to the American College of Psychiatrists. |
