WHUR Reaches Out to Metro Area Residents and Breast Cancer Patients

WHUR 96.3FM Howard University Radio had a busy weekend out in the community Oct. 22 & 23. On Saturday, the station participated in the Third Annual WHUR - BET Jazz Coat Drive. The station received $150 in cash and collected nearly 300 new coats that were distributed equally between the National Capital YMCA and Shepherd's Cove Shelter for women and children in Prince George's County, Md.

On Sunday, WHUR helped the American Cancer Society raise more than $250,000 for its five-mile “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” walk on the National Mall. With nearly 200 walkers, the station had the second largest team among the 60 participating. Additionally, the station ranked sixth in donations, raising $3,330 in on-line donations. Approximately 2,500 people turned out for the event.

Rain Doesn't Dampen Homecoming Spirit; Bison Defeat A&T 16-0

The rainy weekend of Oct. 21-22, wasn’t enough to dampen Howard University’s Homecoming activities. On Friday, crowds converged on the main yard for the annual Yardfest. And, on Saturday, Howard defeated North Carolina A&T University 16-0 at Greene Stadium before a crowd of alumni, students, area residents and guests.

The Bison’s win was celebrated that evening as the nine Greek-letter sororities and fraternities on Howard's campus competed in the annual step show at the D.C. Armory. Thousands came to be a part of this entertaining and intense competition. And, they were not disappointed. Teams pulled out all the stops; demonstrating precision, creativity and agility. In the end, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., a four-time champion, won its fifth victory, and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. sealed its fourth straight victory.

Saturday’s events were a fitting conclusion to a string of Homecoming activities held under the theme “Reminiscence: Build! Treasure! Relive!” that began on Oct. 14 with the Mr. and Miss Howard Pageant and included other annual events such as the gospel concert, featuring Mary Mary, on Oct. 16; the fashion show, “Dare to Be …,” on Oct. 20; and the R&B concert, featuring Common, on Oct. 21.

No. 20 is senior running back Keon Coleman.
