Lucile L. Adams-Campbell, Ph.D., director, Cancer Center, presented opening remarks at the inaugural African-American Prostate Cancer Disparity Summit, hosted by Senator John Kerry (D-Mass.), Congressman Gregory Meeks (D-N.Y.) and the Prostate Health Education Network (PHEN), on Monday, Sept. 19, on Capitol Hill in the Rayburn House Office Building. The two-day summit addressed the nation’s alarming Black prostate cancer disparity. Winston Anderson, Ph.D., professor of biology, has received a MHIRT grant from the NIH/Fogarty International Center. The award, “Minority Research Enhancement through International Exchange,” is $206,000 per year through 2011 and supports undergraduate juniors and seniors to perform research in tropical diseases for 8-12 weeks in the summer beginning 2006. Thomas C. Battle, Ph.D., director of the Moorland-Spingarn Research Center, was inducted as a Society of American Archivists (SAA) Fellow in August during ceremonies at the annual meeting in New Orleans. Established in 1957, it is the highest individual honor bestowed by the SAA, which is the voice of the nation’s archival community and considered the national professional association for archivists in North America. Ed Hill, director, sports information, Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, received the Bob Kenworthy Community Service Award from the College Sports Information Directors of America in July in Philadelphia. The award is given to the sports information director who has contributed greatly to the community outside of his profession. Lalita Kaul, Ph.D., R.D., L.D.N., professor of community health and family practice, College of Medicine, is among nine registered dietitians selected to be media spokespeople for the American Dietetic Association. Her areas of expertise include obesity, cardiovascular nutrition, hyperlipidemia, vegetarianism and elderly nutrition. |
