Howard Observes 139th Charter Day Convocation and Dinner

Howard University observed its 139th Charter Day Convocation and 82nd Dinner on March 3 and 4, respectively. Suzanne de Passe, chairperson and chief executive officer of de Passe Entertainment and visiting professor at Howard’s John H. Johnson School of Communications, was presented the Doctorate of Humanities degree honoris causa during convocation.

In an emotional address, de Passe reflected on her long-standing connection to the University, noting her grandfather, a former student during the World War I era, and a cousin who served on the University’s faculty for three decades. She also very candidly warned students not to follow her winding road to success, which began when she dropped out of college in the ’60s.“I am imminently qualified to say to anyone even thinking of dropping out, don’t.” Instead, de Passe urged students to make sure they are passionate about their chosen field, saying “passion will serve as a fuel for future success.”
