UPDATE # 11
October 30, 2012, 1:02 p.m.

Howard University Community:

The Department of Public Safety provided around-the-clock patrol and security services for the University during Hurricane Sandy. There were no major incidents reported as a result of the storm.

Early assessments show no significant damages on the Main, East or West campus. We are working with Physical Facilities Management (PFM) to complete a full assessment of all campus buildings. The PFM staff will complete repairs as soon as possible. The Office of Residence Life is also working with PFM to address leaks in the residence halls. The Howard Plaza Towers experienced power fluctuations and some outages; however, electricity has since been restored.

The team is working diligently to fully restore campus today and we anticipate that the University will resume normal operations on Wednesday, October 31, 2012

UPDATE # 1
Hurricane Preparedness
October 27, 2012

Dear Howard Community:

Howard University continues to monitor forecasts and reports regarding Hurricane Sandy as it travels north along the east coast of the United States. Current models from the National Weather Service call for Sandy to make landfall on the east coast on Sunday evening near the Delaware Peninsula. As the storm progresses inland, the Washington metropolitan region may experience sustained winds and strong rain increasing from Sunday morning through Tuesday, with the most severe weather occurring Sunday night through Monday. This is a slow moving storm that is expected to cause flooding and wind damage. Models will continue to change as the storm approaches and if the situation warrants, the Howard University website will be updated with additional information.

Hurricane Preparedness Measures:

While there currently are no hurricane watches or warnings for the Washington Metropolitan Area, Howard University community members, on and off campus, are encouraged to take a few minutes to review their personal preparedness measures.

Make a Plan:

Communicate with friends and family to let them know how you are doing.  If you plan on being away, let someone know where you can be reached.
Furniture, bicycles, and other property in outside areas or on balconies should be secured or brought indoors.  Consider moving your vehicles away from trees and poor draining/low lying areas.
Remember to keep your HU Identification card with you at all times.

Build a Kit:

Prepare an emergency kit to include items such as water, snacks, a flashlight, extra batteries, first aid supplies, and prescription medications.
Stay Informed

Monitor the Media:

Monitor the Howard University website and local media for current information on the storm.
If you see a dangerous situation, report it to DPS (202-806-1100)
Familiarize yourself with the terms that are used to identify a hurricane.
Hurricane Watch: A hurricane is possible within 48 hours.
Hurricane Warning: A hurricane is expected to arrive within 36 hours or less.
