ATTENTION ALL STUDENTS:
HOW TO AVOID A MEDICAL HOLD

District of Columbia law requires all students to show proof of completing mandatory immunizations. Students who do not meet these immunization requirements will be placed on medical hold. This status may result in interruptions to a student’s academic class schedule and may impact eligibility for University housing.

Once students have been accepted to Howard University, it is their responsibility to avoid a medical hold by immediately providing the Student Health Center (SHC) with proper immunization documents. To verify that a student’s immunizations are complete, review the following CHECKLIST of REQUIRED IMMUNIZATIONS:

HAVE YOU SUBMITTED DOCUMENTATION TO THE SHC FOR THE FOLLOWING?

  • PPD (tuberculosis skin test) within six months of starting at Howard or
  • If you have a history of a positive PPD, submit a copy of a CXR report completed within six months of starting at Howard
  • Tetanus (Td) or Tdap vaccine within the past 10 years
  • Two MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccines after your first birthday or
  • Submit a copy of immune blood titers (quantitative IgG antibodies for Measles, Mumps and Rubella)
  • Three Hepatitis B vaccines or
  • Submit a copy of immune blood titers (quantitative IgG Hep B surface antibodies)
  • Two Varicella vaccines or history of chicken pox documented by a medical provider with month/year of disease or
  • Submit a copy of immune blood titers (quantitative IgG Varicella antibodies)
  • Meningococcal vaccine

To avoid the placement of a medical hold on a student account:

  • Check BisonWeb for clarification of the student’s immunization status
  • Medical Hold means the student’s immunizations are incomplete
  • For additional information and immunizations forms, refer to the SHC website www.howard.edu/studenthealth

If immunization documents are incomplete:

  • Submit the required documentation immediately
  • You may download required immunization forms from the SHC website (www.howard.edu/studenthealth); then have the student’s Medical Provider complete the forms in their entirety. Return the completed and signed immunization forms to SHC immediately. Remember to double check the forms for completeness.

Health professions students should refer to the SHC website for additional requirements.
