Department of Public Safety Update
November 3, 2012
Howard University Community:
On Friday, November 2, we received a report of an assault in the Bethune Annex. We immediately notified the campus community through our mass email notification system. The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) with support from Howard's Department of Public Safety investigated the case and an arrest was quickly made by MPD.
The safety of our campus community is paramount; we have consistently enhanced security and will take additional steps to bolster security in residence halls on a 24-hour basis. Overall, crime is down on campus as a result of security enhancements and crime prevention education we have taken. We will host a town hall meeting on Sunday, November 4, in the Bethune Annex to address questions, assure the residents of our safety best practices.
Our counseling and support teams are available 24/7 for students and members of the community as needed. As part of our ongoing public safety efforts, we also encourage students to secure their doors at all times, be aware of their surroundings and notify the Department of Public Safety of any suspicious activities at 202-806-1100 as soon as possible. In the event of an emergency call 911.
