The Howard University Campus Police Department recently unveiled the latest addition to its patrol fleet. The two-wheeled machine is not a bicycle, but a Segway Personal Transporter Vehicle (SPTV).

Newly appointed Police Chief Leroy K. James acquired four Segways as part of a comprehensive effort to improve response time and to increase the presence of campus security personnel.

“I am very excited for our patrol officers to have the opportunity to get some new training skills, and use this technology to better serve our students, faculty, staff, and visitors,” James said. “This is just one of the many changes that I am making as we position our police department to be more responsive to our customers, in continuing to make our campus a safe and secure environment.”

The Segway I2 Police model is an energy efficient patrol vehicle that will be used by our officers to better patrol all of our campuses, as well as the hospital.
