WHUR AND WHUR-WORLD Host Annual Thanksgiving Drive
WASHINGTON (November 16, 2008) - WHUR 96.3 FM and WHUR-WORLD HD2 - Howard University in partnership with the Capital Area Food Bank will sponsor “Food2Feed,” a 12-hour radiothon/fundraiser to feed needy families for Thanksgiving at the Old Post Office Pavilion Thursday, November 20, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Volunteers will fan out along 12th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, NW Washington, D.C., encouraging people to donate.
In the Washington Metropolitan area, there are approximately 633,000 residents at risk of, or experiencing hunger. The “Food2Feed” broadcast seeks to collect monetary and non-perishable food items that will be donated to the Capital Area Food Bank (CAFB), the largest, public nonprofit hunger and nutrition education resource in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area. Each year, the CAFB distributes 20 million pounds of food, including 6 million pounds of fresh produce, to over 700 partner agencies. The Capital Area Food Bank will use the donations from the “Food2Feed” radiothon to purchase $60 gift cards from Giant Food to distribute to disadvantaged families in the region.
“These are tough economic times and many families are struggling to take care of the basic necessities,” said Jim Watkins, General Manager of WHUR and WHUR-WORLD.
“We want to help and ‘Food2Feed’ is just one of many ways we are giving back to our community.”
The 12-hour broadcast is the culmination of a six-week campaign by the radio stations educating listeners about the plight of the hungry in the Washington region and abroad.
Additional sponsors of “Food2Feed” include Verizon, Giant Food, SunTrust Bank, BET Foundation, and McDonald’s.
“With the help of our many sponsors and generous listeners, we believe we can make this holiday season a special one for needy families. Hunger is certainly one of those social ills that we all can take an active role in eliminating,” Watkins added.
Donations to the “Food2Feed” radiothon can easily be made at the broadcast site, on-line at www.food2feed.org, or by calling 202-299-1057.
