WASHINGTON (December 4, 2008) – Today, the Howard University Gallery of Art, home to more than 4,000 eclectic pieces, received a historic painting by prolific artist Lois Mailou Jones from Sibley Memorial Hospital Foundation.
The unique oil and canvas piece dated 1938 captures a charming streetscape painted from an apartment window in Montmartre, France, where Jones lived for a brief time. This piece joins 13 compelling works donated in 2006 by the artist’s estate.
“Sibley Memorial Hospital Foundation is pleased that this painting will find its home at Howard University," said Foundation President Audry K. Carter. "An anonymous donator gave a very generous gift during our recent Celebration of Hope and Progress gala auction with the additional thoughtful stipulation that it be given to Howard."
Jones, an award-winning 20th century artist, taught at Howard for more than 40 years and in 2005 a scholarship fund was established in her name by the Department of Fine Arts. For more than 60 years, Jones enjoyed a consistently successful career as a painter, teacher, book illustrator and textile designer.
“We are grateful to Sibley and the anonymous donator who made this gift possible,” said Virgil Ecton, Vice President University Advancement. “Lois Mailou Jones is a Howard treasure and we are thrilled that this piece will be a part of our permanent collection.”
Jones’ work can be viewed in the collections of the Howard University Gallery of Art, the National Museum of American Art, National Museum of Women in the Arts, Hirshhorn Museum, Corcoran Gallery of Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York) and Museum of Fine Arts (Boston), among others.
