Mr.
Charles J. Gibbs to serve
as Interim Vice-Provost for
Student Affairs
Mr.
Charles J. Gibbs, who currently
serves as Dean of Residence
Life at Howard University,
has been appointed to serve
as Interim Vice-Provost for
Student Affairs. His appointment
will be effective on January
26, 2009.
As
Dean of Residence Life, Dean
Gibbs is responsible for the
more than 4,000 students who
reside within the university
housing system. He manages
over 160 full time staff and
approximately 250 student
and para-professional staff
members. Prior to his appointment
as Dean of Residence Life,
he served as the director
of on- campus housing at Howard
University. In that role,
he was selected as the administrator
of the year by the Howard
University Student Association
for the 2004-2005 academic
year.
Dean
Gibbs contributed to the stability
and growth of the Office of
Residence Life by working
with staff to re-engineer
the housing lottery system,
converting it to an online
selection process. In 2006,
he launched the Office of
Residence Life Leadership
(ORL) Institute, which serves
as the brain trust for the
development and training of
young professionals. The ORL
also serves as the office
through which several living
and learning communities have
been created. Among them are
the Drew Hall Warriors Scholar
Community Service Cluster,
Meridian Hill ELI Entrepreneurial
Cluster in Meridian Hill,
which focuses on the development
of young Entrepreneurs, and
the Spiritual and Ethical
Dimensions of Leadership Cluster
in Meridian Hill, which is
a partnership with the University
Chapel.
In
2000, Dean Gibbs began his
career as a national recruiter
for undergraduate studies
in the Department of Enrollment
Management/Admissions at Howard
University. In this role,
he was responsible for representing
the University at recruitment-related
events. He served as the liaison
to counselors, prospective
students, parents and the
general public. In addition,
he was responsible for visiting
high schools and other venues
to make presentations to prospective
students interested in Howard
University about its academic
programs, scholarship opportunities,
and application and enrollment
procedures.
Dean
Gibbs has served on several
university wide committees
and boards focused on enhancing
the delivery of service to
students, faculty and staff.
He serves on such committees
and boards as the Bison Express,
the University Labor Management
Team, University Security
Task Force, the University
Emergency Response Team, Parking
and Shuttle Committee, and
the Bethune Annex Redevelopment
Committee.
Dean
Gibbs is a two-time Howard
University graduate, having
received his undergraduate
degree in 1991 from the School
of Business, and his Masters
of Arts degree in Education
Administration and Policy
from the School of Education.
He is currently a doctoral
student in the School of Education.
As an undergraduate student,
he was an outstanding student
athlete as a member of the
University’s football
team.
