Alumna Taraji P. Henson Named as 2009 Homecoming Ambassador and Grand Marshal
WASHINGTON (October 2, 2009) – The drum beats are leading to the Capstone, the Hilltop, the Mecca and for many that familiar sound leads home. Howard University today unveils Homecoming 2009 “Rhythm – The Pulse of the People.”
The week of activities will kick off on Saturday, Oct. 17 and culminate with the Homecoming Weekend Oct. 23-25.
Alumna and Academy Award-nominated Actress Taraji P. Henson was named as the 2009 Homecoming Ambassador and Grand Marshal. Henson (B.F.A. ‘95) continues to shine on the big screen including her current lead role in Tyler Perry’s “'I Can Do Bad All By Myself'” and earned an Oscar nod for “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” (2008).
“Howard and the Theatre Department has played an integral role in my development as an actress and for that I am grateful,” Henson said. “It is an absolute honor and privilege to come back to Howard and to Washington D.C., my home.”
The Homecoming Parade, Oct. 24, will feature the signature mile-and-a-half parade route through the historic LeDroit Park Community. Nearly two dozen bands will participate from all over the nation as part of the 11th annual Showcase of Bands.
Homecoming would not be the same without staples such as the gospel show featuring headliner Kurt Carr; Friday’s R&B concert with Musiq Soulchild; the football game, and the battle for the golden boot at the step show. Last year, some new items were introduced and they are back by popular demand – the celebrity basketball game and the Steve Harvey Morning Show live from Howard University among other events.
The Alumni Brunch and Fashion Show will celebrate its silver anniversary and promises its best show yet on Oct. 25 at the J.W. Marriott in Washington D.C. For more information, please contact the Office of University Events and Special Projects
