“We are thrilled to be partnering with Howard University to help shape the next generation of young journalists. These are some of the brightest and most curious students you will find anywhere,” said John Green, executive producer of Special Programming and Development at ABC News. “Howard University has a great tradition and dedication to journalism education, and we are excited to welcome its students into the ABC News on Campus program.”

The 2010/2011 student bureau chiefs and faculty liaisons will visit ABC News headquarters for on-site mentoring at the end of September. Each year, student participants are selected by ABC News and the respective colleges through a series of interviews.

Each ABC News on Campus bureau has a team of official ABC News college journalists including a student bureau chief. These positions are supervised by a participating university-appointed faculty member and by ABC News. Howard University’s Student Bureau Chief is Candace Smith, senior broadcast journalism major, interned this summer at ABC’s Good Morning America and is ready for her new assignment. Each ABC News on Campus bureau has a team of official ABC News college journalists including a student bureau chief. We have our first meeting today, but you can look for timely, impacting story that have a local focus and are applicable nationally,” Smith said.

The students are advised by two faculty members in the broadcast journalism sequence –
Peggy Lewis and Valerie Cummings. The students have budget meetings every Monday and Wednesday.
