WASHINGTON
(Oct. 5) – The
Howard University School
of Divinity invites
the University faculty,
students and staff and
Washington area residents
to a special screening
of the upcoming CNN
documentary “Almighty
Debt: A Black in America
Special” from
4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday,
Oct. 7, in the Thurman
Chapel at 1400 Shepherd
St., NE.
In this 90-minute special,
anchor and special correspondent
Soledad O’Brien
focuses on how First
Baptist Church of Lincoln
Gardens, N.J., is helping
its 7,000 members survive
the worst financial
crisis since the Depression.
Americans, particularly
African Americans, have
been hammered by the
recent recession.
Poverty rates and unemployment
among African Americans
have soared. The
special explores one
church’s effort
to fulfill a traditional
role of black churches
in times of crisis,
from slavery to the
Civil Rights Movement. |
The
special airs Oct. 21.
CNN is asking for feedback
from viewers during
these special screenings
on whether the documentary
strikes the right balance
and tone. The
school invites the University
and residents to voice
their opinions about
the documentary.
Following the screening,
a panel will discuss
debt and how churches
and religion can help
the African-American
community overcome the
current crushing recession.
Included on the panel
are School of Divinity
Professors Harold Dean
Trulear, and Kenyatta
Gilbert and Professor
Sandra Crewe of the
School of Social Work.
Rounding out the panel
are Dustin Baker, a
third year master of
divinity student, and
Wheeler Winstead, a
Ph.D. candidate in African
Studies.
