Howard Appoints Distinguished Alumni to Board of Trustees

WASHINGTON (September 21, 2010) –  Howard University named business executive and entrepreneur Amy S. Hilliard and prominent surgeon Charles M. Boyd to its Board of Trustees.

Amy S. Hilliard is founder, president and chief executive of Chicago-based ComfortCake Company LLC, a major distributer of southern-style pound cakes. Hilliard was the first African-American elected to the board of directors of the National Association for the Specialty Food Trade. She is author of “TAP INTO YOUR JUICE: Find Your Gifts, Lose Your Fears, Build Your Dreams.” A new book, “Pounding Cake Into Business,” is due this year. A native of Detroit, Hilliard graduated with honors from Harvard Business School after completing a degree from Howard in 1974, also with honors.

"As an alumna, I am honored and humbled to take part in bringing the energy and impact of Howard's rich legacy to the domestic and global opportunities that will shape the University's future," Hilliard said.

Charles M. Boyd, M.D., is founder and medical director of the Boyd Cosmetic Surgical Institute in Birmingham, Mich. Boyd holds double certification and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Boyd earned his medical degree from Harvard University and an MBA from the University of Michigan

He graduated from Howard summa cum laude in 1987. Boyd committed $1 million to the Campaign for Howard, continuing a record of giving that started in his undergraduate years when he co-founded a scholarship program to help needy students.

“It is good to be home,” Boyd said. “There is nothing more critical than the mission of Howard University. The challenge is for Howard to transition from being the Mecca of Black Education to the Mecca of Education throughout the world. We must strengthen and develop Centers of Excellence and be a leader in research, which I will help to shape as a Board member.”

Howard University’s mission is to provide an educational experience of exceptional quality, with particular emphasis on the provision of opportunities to promising Black students. The University’s formidable list of distinguished alumni include U.S. Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, Wall Street executive Vernon Jordan, director Debbie Allen and Nobel Laureate and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Toni Morrison.
