Dr. Dorothy I. Height Funeral Arrangements Announced

WASHINGTON (April 23) --- Funeral services for Dr. Dorothy I. Height, chair and president emerita of the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) will begin Tuesday, April 27, in Washington, D.C., and end at Washington National Cathedral on Thursday, April 29. Height passed Tuesday, April 20, at Howard University Hospital, at the age of 98.

Tuesday, April 27

6:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. -- Dr. Height will lie in repose at the NCNW Dorothy I. Height building for a public viewing.

Wednesday, April 28

2:00 p.m. --The Delta Sigma Theta Sorority will hold an Omega Omega Service in Burr Gymnasium at Howard University. Dr. Height served as national president of the sorority in 1947.

Special Note

The service is open to members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and the family of Dr. Height. Members attending must observe sorority protocol, including all black attire, no pants and sorority pin.

Location: John H. Burr Gymnasium (Sixth and Girard Streets, NW)

Doors will open at noon.

Sorors are encouraged to use public transportation due to limited parking as well as some street closures on and near campus.

Location
Burr Gymnasium, site of the Omega Omega Service for Dr. Dorothy I. Height, is located at 6th and Girard Streets, N.W. Howard University is located in the northwest section of Washington, D.C. The main traffic arteries within close proximity to the campus are 4th Street to the east, Georgia Avenue to the west, Florida Avenue to the south and Harvard Street to the north.

Metro Access
The Shaw/Howard Metro stop is the closest stop on the green line and yellow line. U Street Cardozo stop is an alternate stop on the yellow line. Metro use is strongly encouraged as parking is limited. From the Shaw-Howard Metro Station, exit from the 7th Street/Georgia Ave. side, turn right/north and proceed approximately eight blocks until you have reached the Burr Gymnasium on your right.

Schedule for the 70 bus

Shuttle Service
Limited shuttle busses will make frequent stops at the Shaw/Howard Metro stop. Beginning at 11:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., shuttles will be available for the attendees of the Omega Omega Service. Shuttles will drop-off and pick-up at Fairmont and 6th Street in front of Cramton Auditorium on 6th Street.

Parking
Metered on-street parking is limited. Metro use is encouraged where possible.

Arrival by Chartered Bus
The bus drop-off and discharge point is Georgia Ave. and Fairmont. Howard University is located in the northwest section of Washington, D.C. The main traffic arteries within close proximity to the campus are 4th Street to the east, Georgia Avenue to the west, Florida Avenue to the south and Harvard Street to the north. Burr Gymnasium, site of the Omega Omega Service, is located at 6th and Girard Streets, N.W. and accessible from Georgia Ave. To prevent congestion upon arrival, busses will not be allowed to drop-off on Girard Street. Following the service, busses will be allowed to travel Girard Street to pick-up passengers on 6th Street. From Georgia Ave., make a right onto Girard St. and another right onto 6th St.

7:00 p.m. -- A “Community Celebration of Life” memorial will be held at Shiloh Baptist Church in Washington, D.C. The memorial is open to the public.

Thursday, April 29

10:00 a.m. --- A funeral service will be held at Washington National Cathedral and is open to the public. The burial service will follow at Fort Lincoln Cemetery in Maryland.
