Trinidad and Tobago’s First Woman Prime Minister Hosts
Town Hall at Howard
WASHINGTON (April 4, 2011) – The Honorable Kamla Persad-Bissessar, Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago will host a public Town Hall meeting at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 5 at the Howard University School of Business auditorium.

The Prime Minister will be accompanied by members of her cabinet and will address nationals of Trinidad and Tobago residing in the Washington metropolitan area and the University community on issues related to gender as well as leadership.

Persad-Bissessar entered the political arena in 1987, and since 1995 she has been a Member of Parliament, serving as Attorney General, Minister of Legal Affairs, and Minister of Education between 1995 and 2001. On May 26, 2010, Persad-Bissessar made history as the first woman elected to the office of Prime Minister of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. She is one of a small group of female leaders to head a sovereign nation. Before that, Persad-Bissessar was Leader of the Opposition, also the first woman to hold that position in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.

She has earned degrees from the University of the West Indies, Norwood Technical College (England,) and the Hugh Wooding Law School. In 2006, she obtained an Executive Masters in Business Administration from the Arthur Lok Jack Graduate School of Business in Trinidad. Persad-Bissessar is married to Dr. Gregory Bissessar and has one son.
