WASHINGTON (March 22, 2011) – Jazz singer and six-time Grammy nominee Nnenna Freelon will headline Howard University’s Fourth Annual Jazz Week. In celebration of Jazz Appreciation Month, the Department of Music will host a week of jazz concerts and lectures from April 3 to April 10.

Known as the “international voice of jazz,” Nnenna Freelon has worked with a dozens of artists including Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles and Al Jarraeu. She has also performed at the White House and Carnegie Hall. Freelon will be feautured in a concert that will  kick off Jazz Week’s events on Sunday, April 3 at the Andrew Rankin Memorial Chapel at 3 pm. Tickets can be purchased at the door on the day of the concert.

Jazz Week will also feature performances by The Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Ensemble, Afro Blue, “The Next Wave (U.S. Naval Academy Jazz Band) and the Howard University Jazz Ensemble. The week’s lectures and performances will be held on Howard’s main campus and locations throughout Washington D.C.
