Howard University Receives Two Sirius XM Radio Channels

WASHINGTON (April 18, 2011) – Today, Sirius XM Radio granted Howard University licenses to create two channels on the satellite radio system. The historic lease represents a significant step towards diversifying the airwaves.

Howard has been a trailblazer in broadcast media. The University currently owns and operates a commercial radio station – WHUR 96.3 FM and a digital station – WHUR-World. In addition, Howard owns WHUT-TV, the first African-American owned public broadcast station.

One station will offer the best of WHUR and WHUR-World.  The channel, which has not yet been named, will showcase signature programs such as the “Daily Drum,” a news talk show highlighting the top stories and newsmakers; the “Sighlent Storm,” the only show on radio devoted to tackling the issue of domestic violence, the “Dr. Audrey Chapman Show,” the relationship guru who helps listeners to solve all of their romantic issues; and “Let’s Talk Money,” an hour-long program focusing on financial matters.

The second station will be managed by Howard University, but will feature programming and talent from Historically Black Colleges and Universities around the country.

“We are extremely excited and honored to have an opportunity to nationalize our local programming efforts,” said Jim Watkins, general manager of WHUR and WHUR World, “This opportunity allows Howard University and WHUR to further extend our brand and embodies our mission to serve America and the global community.”

Watkins adds, “We were significantly aided by our partners at Squire, Sanders & Dempsey LLP and appreciate their ongoing support of Howard.”
