| Howard Middle School Wins Google Grant to Build ‘Fab Lab’ |
 |
WASHINGTON (March 1, 2011) – Google Inc. will announce a $250,000 grant to the Howard University Middle School of Mathematics and Science(MS)² at 10 a.m. on Monday, March 7. (MS)2 is located at 405 Howard Place, NW, Washington, D.C., on the main campus.
The grant, through the Tides Foundation, will offset the cost for completing a state-of-the-art computer-automated design and manufacturing lab (MS)². The check presentation is part of an education panel discussion led by Google executives and a representative from the U.S. House Committee of Science and Technology and is followed by an expo on science, technology and engineering. The expo will showcase robotics, architecture and solar cars. |
The computer-automated design and manufacturing lab is intended to foster an invention-friendly environment for students. Yohance Maqubela, the chief operating officer at (MS)², said the lab is intended to foster an invention-friendly environment and reinvigorate the learning process.
“The lab will give students the opportunity to increase their practical application of the subjects they’re learning,” Maqubela said. “With this lab, we will be able to take education to another level.”
The planned lab is a scaled version of the original ‘Fab Lab’ at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Currently, ‘Fab Labs’ have been adopted worldwide, including versions in South Africa, Spain and Costa Rica. |
