Ciera N. Turner Receives Reginald F. Lewis Foundation Scholar Prize

WASHINGTON (May 14, 2011) – Today, Ciera Turner received a Bachelor of Science in Pre-Physical Therapy from the College of Pharmacy, Nursing & Allied Health Sciences and was awarded the competitive Reginald F. Lewis Scholar Prize. The $10,000 prize is awarded to the undergraduate student whose cumulative grade point average demonstrates the highest increase between the sophomore and senior years.

A native of Alabama, Turner arrived at Howard University in the spring of 2008. Since then, she has had an extraordinarily busy life, balancing her academic pursuits with her involvement in volunteer and extracurricular activities, such as the University band and working in the Andrew Rankin Memorial Chapel. Her commitment to the educational growth of young ladies led her to become a volunteer mentor and tutor at Young Ladies of Tomorrow, a non-profit organization in the District of Columbia.

Turner intends to continue her academic pursuits by attending Medical School with the goal of becoming a physician.

In 1990, the Reginald F. Lewis Foundation, Inc. established the Howard University Reginald F. Lewis Fund to support various student and faculty enrichment academic activities. A cornerstone of the innovative initiative is the Reginald F. Lewis Scholar Prize. The University President bestows the award during the Commencement exercise to a graduating senior, selected from the University’s undergraduate population, whose record reflects the highest degree of academic progress.
