WHUR-World Wins Award for Innovative Music and News Programming

Jim Watkins
WASHINGTON (Aug 18) – Howard University’s award-winning radio station, WHUR-FM 96.3, picked up another honor, this time for its sister station, 96.3-HD2 WHUR-WORLD.

WHUR-WORLD has been named winner of the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) fifth annual HD Radio Multicast Award.  Winners of the award are recognized for their ability to provide innovative, groundbreaking programming on their multicast channel, said the NAB, an advocacy association for the nation’s radio broadcasters.

WHUR-WORLD, which also won the award in 2008, produces eclectic programming that includes several cultural platforms to engage diverse listeners across the Washington region and beyond.  Its music is a mix of jazz, rhythm and blues, blues, hip hop and African-American folk.
The station also has produced several provocative and informative radio documentaries, including “Black Draft: Rise of the Black Athlete,” “Unleashing the Chains: Black Men in Prison,” “Freedom Riders: 50 Years Beyond SNCC” and “Legacy of a Legend: Michael Jackson’s Story.”
Another talk program, “The Sighlent Storm,” discusses domestic violence on Saturdays.

WHUR General Manager Jim Watkins will accept the award Sept. 15 during the 2011 Radio Show, a three-day radio industry conference in Chicago produced by the NAB and the Radio Advertising Bureau, the sales and marketing association for the radio industry.

“We are honored to receive this prestigious award,” Watkins said.  This award is a tribute to our hardworking staff and management at WHUR WORLD.  It is especially gratifying this year as our parent station celebrates 40 years of broadcasting excellence and community service.”
