Earthquake Updates - August 24, 2011


Update #16

  • 6:45 a.m.
    • The University is open for business today, August 24. Structural engineers have determined that all campus buildings, with one exception, are safe for occupancy. We are doing further assessment of Founders Library and additional information is forthcoming. Individuals entering other buildings may see some visual impact from the earthquake, but should be
      assured that the buildings are structurally sound. Also note, the I-Lab will open at 10 a.m.
    • Students with classes scheduled in Founders Library should contact the Office of the Provost for further details.

  • 8:39 p.m.
    • Howard University Shuttle Service has resumed its normal schedule.

Update #13

  • 7:59 p.m.
    • Howard University Community:
      Shuttle Buses will pick students up at the following locations:
      • *Georgia Avenue and Fairmont Street
      • *Georgia Avenue and Berry Place
      • Service will be slow due to heavy traffic.

  • 7:50 p.m.
    • East campus and Mays Hall have been cleared for re-entry.

  • 7:15 p.m.
    • Slowe, Meridian and Carver Halls and the East and West Towers have been cleared for re-entry.

  • 6:15 p.m.

    • Carver Hall has been cleared for re-entry.

Update #8

  • 6:05 p.m.

    • Tubman Quadrangle has been cleared for re-entry.

  • 5:43 p.m.
    • The Bethune Annex is now cleared for re-entry.

Update # 6

  • 5:30 p.m.
    • Cook and Drew Halls are now cleared for re-entry.

Update #5

  • 5: 00 p.m.
    • Blackburn Center is now open. A light meal is being prepared for students.
    • Students are now able to access the first floor and the lower level of the Blackburn Center. Also open are the following rooms in Blackburn: the forum, auditorium and small classrooms.
    • Our engineers continue to check all other university buildings. Thank you for your continued patience during this emergency.

  • 3:23 p.m.
    • We will continue to update you on our progress.
    • All University non-essential personnel are dismissed for the day. Please stay tuned for further updates via University Communications

  • 3:05 p.m.
    • Howard University Hospital:
      According to the Chief Operating Officer of Howard University Hospital, the evacuation notice does not apply to Howard University Hospital.

  • 2:41 p.m.
    • Howard University Community:
      United States Geological Survey reports an earthquake in the Metropolitan Area registering at 5.9 on the Richter Scale. Small aftershocks reported. As safety measure if experiencing please take cover under a desk, table, bed or door frames. Stay clear of windows and other glass. Please stay put. If you are outdoors find areas clear of buildings. Stay tuned to radio and tv news updates

    • Possible minor earthquake.
    • All buildings are being evacuated until further notice.
