WHUR-FM 96.3 Named Urban Station of the Year

WASHINGTON  (Sept. 16) –WHUR-FM, Howard University’s radio station, was named Urban Station of the Year at the 2011 National Association of Broadcasters' (NAB) Marconi Radio Awards.

The station received the award at the annual NAB Marconi Radio Awards Dinner & Show, held Sept. 15 during the 2011 Radio Show in Chicago, Illinois.  The Radio Show, produced by NAB and the Radio Advertising Bureau (RAB), brought together radio broadcasters and industry colleagues to share knowledge, discover the latest innovations, network with industry leaders and explore creative business strategies to help radio flourish.

"WHUR is very pleased to be honored with this prestigious award from the National Association of Broadcasters,” WHUR General Manager Jim Watkins said.  “To be recognized by your peers as one of the best radio stations in the country, is truly one of the proudest moments in our history.

This award is particularly significant for us this year as WHUR celebrates its 40th Anniversary in December of delivering broadcasting excellence and community service to our Washington, DC area listeners."

NAB, an advocacy association for America's broadcasters, advances radio and television interests in legislative, regulatory and public affairs. RAB leads and participates in educational, research, sales and advocacy programs that promote and advance radio as a primary advertising medium.
The awards recognize radio's outstanding personalities and stations in over 20 categories. Marconi finalists were selected by a task force of broadcasters, and the winners were voted on by the NAB Marconi Radio Awards Selection Academy. The votes were tabulated by an independent firm.
