High Anticipation for Homecoming 2011

WASHINGTON (October 19, 2011) – Homecoming 2011 will shift into high gear on Friday afternoon with 100,000 alumni and friends converging on the historic campus of Howard University to share traditions and rekindle memoirs of “The Yard.”

With AT&T as a proud sponsor, the Homecoming 2011 was able to “Rethink Possible.” This year’s theme is “Prestige: The Epitome of Distinction.”

The weeklong celebration continues with Young Jeezy, who headlines the International Yardfest on Oct. 21.  Other scheduled performers include Wale, Raheem DeVaughn, Big Daddy Kane and Whodini. On Friday night, attendees will be treated to the sounds of R&B crooners Joe, Tyrese, Monica, Melanie Fiona and Avant in a ’90s R&B-themed concert at the DC Armory.

The homecoming parade tradition continues on Saturday at 10 a.m. with scores of bands from around the country and the Bahamas as the rhythmic nation traverses through the streets of the Ledroit Park community. Actor Boris Kodjoe serves as this year’s Homecoming Grand Marshal.

Tyson Beckford returns this year to host the 13th Annual Showcase of Bands and Jamboree, where bands compete for a cash prize. Judges for the event will include celebrity guest Melyssa Ford and others.

Following the parade, the Howard Bison Football team, led by Coach Gary Harrell, will take on the North Carolina AT&T Aggies at Greene Stadium beginning at 1 p.m.

On Saturday at 6 p.m., comedian Billy Sorrells and hip-hop legend MC Lyte will host the National Pan-Hellenic Step Show at the DC Armory. The show promises to be a grand showcase of precision movement.

Earlier this week, the Howard University community enjoyed spoken word from artist Talib Kweli, at the Poetry Cipher, laughs from Joe Clair and other comedians at the Comedy Show and listened to the amazing voice of Shirley Caesar, who headlined the annual gospel show. Other events included the second annual HowardWood event, where students mixed with entertainment industry professionals, and the Power Summit event, where a panel of leaders from education, entertainment, sports, and politics offered students tips on empowerment and achieving success.
