Howard hosts ‘Green is the New Black’ Jobs Fair and Symposium
Green businesses, non-profits, performers to showcase African-American history and job opportunities, advocacy and entrepreneurship

WASHINGTON (February 16, 2012) – Green For All -- a national organization working to build an inclusive green economy -- Howard University, and Black Enterprise magazine will present “Green is the New Black,” Thursday, Feb. 23. at 3 p.m. in the Blackburn Center ballroom on Howard’s main campus. The event will feature a jobs fair, presentations, food and entertainment for young adults. To RSVP, text greenblack to 25827.
In honor of Black History month, the event will honor the contributions of African Americans who fought -- and continue to fight -- for a more sustainable planet and an equitable society. Dozens of green businesses and non-profits will share opportunities for young people in the green economy -- from jobs and internships, to opportunities for advocacy, service and entrepreneurship as part of a Green Opportunities Fair.

“African-Americans are seeing unemployment rates exponentially higher then the rest of the country,” said Phaedra Ellis-Lamkins, chief executive of Green For All.  “We need to get our young people inspired and involved in the possibilities of the fastest growing sector of our economy – the green economy.”

The event will feature performances and speeches from R&B singer KJ Rose, vegan chef and author Bryant Terry, the American Association of Blacks in Energy’s Anita McRae, and songwriter and producer Jack Knight. Organic catering from a local African-American owned company will be provided and all the materials will be compostable.
