WASHINGTON (October 17, 2012) – Howard University announced that film actor Laz Alonso will serve as the 2012 Homecoming Grand Marshal. This year’s homecoming theme “Legendary: The Essence of Icons,” will culminate with the alumni weekend, Oct. 20-21.

"To serve as this year's ambassador and grand marshal are a tremendous honor for me," Alonso said. "As a student at Howard, I always hoped I would be infused with whatever made our Alumni rise to the top of their fields. Every homecoming inspired me to continue to reach for greatness as I saw such positive examples return for this occasion. I hope that my presence at Homecoming, inspires current students as it for did me."

The acclaimed actor added, "I thank Howard for selecting me among so many amazing stories that have come from the yard."

On Saturday, Oct. 20, at 9:30 a.m. the homecoming parade tradition will continue with great fanfare. The mile-and-a-half route through the historic LeDroit Park Community will feature bands from around the country, led by the Howard University Showtime Marching Band.

The week of activities kicks off Wednesday with Dream Day, a career exploration symposium featuring Howard alum and industry leaders. As anticipated, the Homecoming favorites are returning and Homecoming is expected to live up to the high expectations. Performers participating in this year’s events include Hip-Hop recording artists 2 Chainz, Pusha T and Naughty By Nature.  This year’s Gospel Show will feature the renowned Fred Hammond.

Born and raised in Washington, D.C., Laz Alonso starred in the lead role in Avatar, the highest grossing film of all time.  Alonso graduated from the prestigious Howard University School of Business, earning a bachelor’s degree in business administration. After college, he worked on Wall Street at an investment banking firm. He and several partners eventually started a marketing business. Owning and operating his own successful business freed up Alonzo to finally explore his passion for acting.
