Washington, DC (October 31, 2013) – The Howard University Radio Network is joining forces with the Capital Area Food Bank and Shabach Ministries to help feed thousands of needy families for the Thanksgiving holiday season. WHUR 96.3 FM, the flagship station of the radio network will broadcast live Tuesday, Nov. 19th from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. outside the Old Post Office Pavilion encouraging listeners to donate to its 12-hour fundraiser entitled “Food2Feed.”
Volunteers will fan out along 12th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, NW to collect monetary and non-perishable food donations. The Capital Area Food Bank and Shabach Ministries will use those donations to provide Thanksgiving food baskets to needy families in the Washington region, complete with a turkey and all the trimmings. It is estimated that over 633,000 residents in the area are either at-risk of or are experiencing hunger on any given day. “We know these are tough economic times for many. We hope the “Food2Feed” radiothon will provide some relief for those families struggling to make ends meet,” said Howard University Radio Network General Manager Jim Watkins.
WHUR has been hosting a Thanksgiving fundraiser for more than three decades. Last year, “Food2Feed” raised over $85,000.00 and collected two truckloads of canned goods. Additional sponsors of “Food2Feed” include SunTrust Bank, Wegmans, MGM National Harbor, and the Old Post Office Pavilion.
