College of Pharmacy Expands International
Training Opportunities

WASHINGTON (Tuesday, March 4, 2014) – Students in the Howard University College of Pharmacy are gaining real-world experience in international pharmacy through a new rotation program that arranges placements in at least five countries.

Four students recently started rotations in India and Qatar.  The international pharmacy rotation program was launched last year to give students practical experience in international health care and healthcare systems.  In addition to India and Qatar, students have completed rotations in Ethiopia, South Africa and Zambia.

“Our international rotations are important elements in the pharmacy program because they provide the opportunity for Howard University students to experience how pharmacy and health care are practiced in global settings,” said Dr. Anthony Wutoh, Dean of the College of Pharmacy.  “The rotations also provide unique experiences for our students that will positively impact their careers going forward.

“Interacting with other health professionals on a global basis helps provide an advantage to our students who may be considering leadership opportunities, as well as widening their understanding of the impact they can make in an increasingly global environment,” Dr. Wutoh added.

Fourth year pharmacy students Porscha Johnson and Ree Dotts were selected to travel to Jagadguru Sri Shivarathreeshwara University (JSS) University Hospital in Mysore, India, for a five-week experience.

For Johnson, the experience is life-changing.  “This is a wonderful opportunity to experience pharmacy practice on an international level.  Experiencing the role of pharmacists in other countries has truly helped me to re-imagine my role as a future pharmacist and confirmed what I have learned at Howard.”

The College of Pharmacy recently signed a Memorandum of Agreement with JSS University to collaborate on research and educational efforts, including faculty and student exchanges.  These students represent the first exchange students as part of this collaboration.

Two other fourth year pharmacy students, Brittany Hill and Leyla Daneshmand, were selected to travel to Al Wakra Hospital in Doha, Qatar, for their international rotation experiences.  The assistant director of pharmacy at Al Wakra Hospital, Dr. Wesam Smidi, is a Howard graduate and was instrumental in establishing the relationship with Howard University.
