Comedian Kier Spates Featured at Sickle Cell Day Event

Kier Spates

WASHINGTON (June 12, 2014) – Comedian Kier Spates, known as “Junior” from The Steve Harvey Morning Show, will be the featured guest speaker at the Howard University Center for Sickle Cell Disease and Faces of Our Children’s program on Thursday, June 19. The program will take place in the Numa P.G. Adams building, room 3019, 520 W. St., NW, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The event is on annual World Sickle Cell Awareness Day which commemorates the date in 2008 when the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted a resolution recognizing sickle cell disease as a public health concern. World Sickle Cell Awareness Day provides an opportunity to increase understanding of the genetic disorder.

Spates, who has sickle cell disease, is the official spokesperson for Sickle Cell Disease Association of America (SCDAA) in Baltimore. In addition, Dr. Oswaldo Castro, senior advisor and College of Medicine professor emeritus, will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award at the event.

To RSVP, please contact Angela Mason, outreach coordinator at the Howard University Center for Sickle Cell Disease, at 202-865-8292.

Dr. Oswaldo Castro
