Sergei Nekhai
WASHINGTON (August 4, 2014) – Two Americans, one of them a doctor, were recently infected with the Ebola virus while working in Liberia and are returning to the United States for treatment. Howard University has a virologist available to comment on the Ebola virus and current research for Ebola treatments.

Virologist Sergei Nekhai, professor of medicine at Howard University College of Medicine, has been awarded a $1.9 million National Institutes of Health grant to develop novel filovirus inhibitors, including inhibitors against Ebola (EBOV) and Marburg viruses.

The study is part of a $16 million Center of Excellence in Translational Research (CETR) grant led by the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai that also includes University of Texas Medical Branch, University of Washington, Southern Texas University and Microbiotix Inc. Ebola and Marburg cause the most severe hemorrhagic fever known in humans, with a mortality rate of up to 90 percent. There are no approved vaccines or treatments.
