<description>WASHINGTON (April 10, 2013) – The 2013 Symposium on U.S. Healthcare at Howard University has announced Dr. Louis W. Sullivan, former U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, as its keynote speaker on Wednesday, April 10.

Health professionals from across the nation will assemble at Howard for the one-day event, held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Armour Blackburn Center, 2397 6th St., N.W., Washington, D.C. Attendees and speakers from health professions will focus on minority health disparities, building the capacity to combat issues through education, research and community leadership, and establishing a pipeline for minorities in STEM careers.

Health disparities among minority U.S. populations and ethnic groups are apparent in the adult deaths, infant mortality rates and other oft-cited health measures. By promoting minority preparation for leadership roles and improving access to a more diverse group of health professionals, health outcomes can be improved in vulnerable communities.

<link>http://www.howard.edu/newsroom/releases/2013/2013128HowardTeaminAtlanticOceanResearchingStormPredictionandHurricanesinUSandtheCaribbean.html</link><category>Education</category>
<description>WASHINGTON (January 25, 2013) -- A Howard University-led National Oceanographic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) research team is currently in the tropical Atlantic Ocean, where it is studying how small particles suspended in the air originating from Africa affect weather in the U.S. and Caribbean. The team's data could potentially improve hurricane forecasting.

Howard University professor Vernon Morris, Ph.D., principle investigator for the program and director of the NOAA Center for Atmospheric Sciences (NCAS) at Howard, said the Aerosols and Ocean Science Expeditions (AEROSE) hopes to detail the connection between African winds and the particles they carry, called aerosols, and the weather across the Atlantic.

“We are looking at the movement of air masses that come out of West Africa and the associated aerosols,” Morris said. “Some aerosols come from the dust storms. Some are coming from the slash and burn fires that they have in certain African countries. Some come from the mega-cities that African nations are building.”

Howard Students GEAR UP To Make a Global Difference

<description>WASHINGTON – People in Kenya could soon be benefitting from a waste treatment plant that captures methane gas for use as a biofuel. In Indonesia, city residents in Jakarta will have the use of clean water from a recharge pond. In Ethiopia, more people located in small villages will have access to electricity. All of these improvements are the result of research projects by Howard University students in the GEAR UP program.

GEAR UP (Global Education, Awareness and Research Undergraduate Program) is spearheaded by the College of Engineering, Architecture and Computer Sciences. The program is supported by the National Science Foundation. The goal is to increase the global engagement of graduates in engineering and other sciences through study and research abroad.

The Institute of International Education estimates that only 4.7 percent of engineering graduates have studied abroad. For African-American students, the percentage is even smaller. Lorraine Fleming, Ph.D., the GEAR UP director and a professor of civil engineering, said students from the college need study abroad experience.

“Students come back with a new awareness and perspective on life,” she said. “Students realize the world doesn’t center on us. It’s not U.S.-centric.”

For Many, the Stigma of HIV Is Harder to Live with than the Disease

<description>WASHINGTON (Nov. 19) -- Before Olivia reveals her deepest secret to those she feels she can trust, she first likes to play a game of “What If.”
“What if I had one leg?” she asks. “Would you still be my friend?”

“What if I was missing all of my teeth,” she continues cautiously.

“What if I never combed my hair?”

And finally, she pauses for a moment and then asks the one question that is always on her mind.

“What if I had AIDS? Would you still be my friend?”

Olivia, not her real name, and millions of others with HIV/AIDS struggle with that question and the stigma around their disease daily. They hear people, including friends and sometimes family, utter the hurtful comments and stereotypical remarks associated with those who have the disease. They are particularly hard for teenagers who are trying so desperately to fit in.

Howard Students GEAR UP To Make a Global Difference
</title>
<link>http://www.howard.edu/newsroom/releases/2012/20121120HowardStudentsGEARUPToMakeaGlobalDifference.html</link><category>Education</category>
All of these improvements are the result of research projects by Howard University students in GEAR UP program.

GEAR UP (Global Education, Awareness and Research Undergraduate Program) is spearheaded the College of Engineering, Architecture and Computer Sciences.

<description>WASHINGTON (Nov. 16) -- Before Olivia reveals her deepest secret to those she feels she can trust, she first likes to play a game of “What If.”

<description>WASHINGTON (October 25, 2012) – Howard University President Sidney A. Ribeau joined Congressman Charles B. Rangel and Secretary Hillary Clinton on Oct. 2 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Program at a State Department ceremony.

"Howard University's international footprint is more important than ever. Through programs like the Rangel and Pickering, we are able to scale up our efforts to diversify the foreign service and uniquely prepare our students to advance this national agenda," said Howard University President Sidney A. Ribeau.

The Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Program is an initiative involving the U.S. Department of State, the Ralph J. Bunche International Affairs Center of Howard University, and the U.S. Congress. Congressman Rangel created the program in 2002 to diversify our Foreign Service and to give young people, especially minorities, exposure to careers of international service. Howard has produced more Rangel fellows than any other university.

President Ribeau accepted an award at the ceremony which recognized Howard University for its management of the Rangel Program over the past decade. Harold A. Scott, Ph.D., interim director of the Ralph J. Bunche International Center, where the Rangel Program is based, also attended. Patricia H. Scroggs, who directs the Rangel program at Howard, also was honored.
