                      <description> WASHINGTON – Despite tremendous odds, April Vance overcame a difficult youth as a foster child. Her success stemmed from an ability to stick to her dreams and focus on education. Most importantly, though, Vance credits her skillfulness in navigating the government's complex and sometimes frightening foster care system.

Now Vance, a senior broadcast journalism major at Howard University, is on the brink of finding a way to use that knowledge to help kids maneuver the roadblocks she once faced.

Morial charged the 2011 Howard University graduates to hold to three standards as they pursue their careers – strive for excellence, advocate for equality and have high expectations.

				Morial, the orator for University's 143rd Commencement told the more than nearly 2000 graduates they must never accept mediocrity.

				"Oprah Winfrey is where she is because she is the best," the former mayor of New Orleans told the graduates, a sea of royal blue robes and mortarboards under a slate gray sky. "Barack Obama is where he is because he is the best. You must be excellent."

			<description>
				WASHINGTON -- Clinical trials conducted at Howard University College of Medicine and 12 other medical institutions across the nation have discovered a treatment that dramatically reduces pain, inflammation and hospitalization time and eases other symptoms in young children suffering from sickle cell anemia .

				Doctors and medical clinicians in a four-year study found that using the drug hydroxycarbamide (also called hydroxyurea) in very young children with sickle cell anemia was safe and markedly reduced episodes of pain and other problems. Hydroxycarbamide has been used in adults for several decades for a variety of cancer treatments and is approved for use in adults with sickle cell anemia.

				The findings, which will be published in this week's edition of The Lancet, the world's leading medical journal, suggest that use of hydroxycarbamide should now be the standard of care for all children with sickle cell disease.

				WASHINGTON (April 14, 2011) – Getting to the top takes hard work and dedication. Trying to pass that commitment down to inner-city kids can be a challenge at times. Urban Youth Racing School founder Anthony Martin, answering President Barack Obama's call to action on education and mentorship, found a solution in the "What It Takes" symposiums Presented by the US ARMY. The national outreach initiative, which connects highly successful minority entrepreneurs, scientists, professional athletes, businessmen, military officers, medical professionals and educators with high potential but low performing minority males, will be held in partnership with Howard University on from 2-6 p.m. on April 14 in the Armour J.
