NATIONAL HISTORY
In
October of 1952, representatives from eight colleges and universities met
at Beekman Towers
in New York City
to organize a nationally-based service organization. Each of the schools
was: Boston University, Drexel Institute of Technology (now Drexel University),
Los Angeles City College, New York University, Brooklyn
College, Queens
College, the University of Houston,
and Miami University of Ohio. The group drafted a constitution, which
later became the bylaws, elected the first National Board of Directors,
and adopted a name for their organization. "Girl's Service
Sorority", or GSS, translated in Greek, Gamma Sigma Sigma. The date
commemorating the first convention, October 12, is celebrated as
founder's day for Gamma Sigma Sigma.
