Office of the President Howard University

April 20, 2010

Howard University joins the nation and the world in mourning the loss of Dr. Dorothy Irene Height, civil rights icon, human rights activist, visionary, educator and humanitarian who died today. A giant may have fallen but a voice has not been stilled.

Dr. Height will be remembered not only as an advisor to several U.S. presidents, but also as an advocate for families and a champion of justice. We are all her children, heirs of the dream and inheritors of the legacy she leaves. Certainly, the lessons she taught, the life she led and the examples she set for nearly a century are extraordinary. We are humbled by her service to humanity and her lifelong commitment to helping others.

We join her family, her beloved National Council of Negro Women – the organization that she led for more than forty years – and her many friends throughout the nation in declaring that we have a better world because she lived.

Sincerely,

Sidney A. Ribeau
President
