Dear Howard Family, The recent unprecedented winter storms remind us that the Howard spirit is resilient and the Howard community is dedicated. As the historic blizzard conditions pummeled the area, the stories of service at HU were extraordinary. Dozens of employees deemed essential answered the call, worked around the clock and going the extra mile to make sure that sidewalks and roads were cleared and that basic services and support for students continued. Some worked double and triple shifts; others spent nights on campus, sleeping on cots and makeshift beds. Others braved the wintry conditions to assure that food was delivered to students or that a facility was opened or that critical buildings remained accessible and staffed. At Howard University Hospital, staff worked assiduously to guarantee that high quality service went uninterrupted. To all who contributed – we appreciate your commitment and are grateful for your service. The HU Emergency Management Team, under the direction of Chief of Campus Police Leroy James, did an extraordinary job of coordinating our University’s efforts and keeping us informed. Thanks especially to the HU Police Department and to Physical Facilities Management, Auxiliary Enterprises (dining and shuttle services), Residence Life, Student Affairs, Student Health, Office of the Provost, University Communications, Human Capital Management, University Counseling Service, as well as East and West campus managers. The work done by Dr. Greg Jenkins, chair of the Department of Physics and Astronomy, and his colleagues was exceptional as they charted the direction of the storms and provided in-depth analysis of the snow events as they happened. Thanks to the many volunteers, community friends and others who from somewhere on campus or from remote locations worked tirelessly to help in one way or another. As we clean up, following the record-breaking snowfall, and get back to the work ahead, we can’t forget nor ignore the many seen and unseen acts of commitment that ensured Howard University and its family members were able to weather the storm. Please join me in thanking those who made a difference. Also view a short video featuring the clean up and student support efforts. Sincerely, Sidney A. Ribeau
